Hiriko Fold City Car Concept, 2012. A folding electric prototype designed for car-sharing schemes which was to be built in the Basque Country of northern Spain (the name Hiriko comes from the Basque word for “urban” or “from the city”). The project received EU funding and pre-production prototypes were presented in 2012 with production due to begin in 2013. A pilot program was scheduled to take place in Germany to integrate the Hiriko Fold into Deutsche Bahn’s railway service to allow their customers the possibility of using a vehicle parked at the station with which to complete the last section of their journey. However the project ran into financial difficulties in 2013 and in 2015 public prosecutors in Spain accused six businessmen involved in the project of fraud.
